Check the serial and reference numbers: Breitling uses both reference and serial numbers to identify its watches. Breitling states that the reference number identifies the watch model, while serial numbers have been unique to individual Breitling watches since 2000. These numbers can be found on the caseback and may also appear on the documentation supplied with the watch.
Compare the watch with the correct reference: Breitling has produced many variations of the same collection over the years. The dial, bezel, case, bracelet, movement and functions should make sense for the exact reference rather than simply looking similar to another Breitling.
Look closely at the finishing: Pay attention to the dial printing, hour markers, hands, engravings, bezel and bracelet. Poor printing, uneven finishing or details that do not match the known reference deserve a closer inspection.
