Dial and Hands: Careful check of any dial condition, original or altered, and the hands’ condition.
Serial and Model Numbers: They will check the serial and model number to confirm the watch’s authenticity against the records of the manufacturer.
2. Movement Inspection
Movement Check: The appraiser opens up the case back if necessary to take a closer view of the movement. They will know from there what kind of movement, the brand’s hallmark, and telltale signs of service or tampering.
Condition and Functionality: They will see if it’s in good working movement, not worn down too much or corroded, and if it’s mechanical, quartz, or automatic.
Watch Precision: Timing checks will be done to check whether the watch is keeping accurate time or not.
3. Authenticity Check
The appraiser will check if the watch and its parts are original, not replaced with after-market and fake ones.
4. Documentation and Paperwork
The appraiser will check if the original box, papers, and receipts are available. This would add considerably to the value of the watch.
If it is available, they could check past ownership history or even service history of the watch.
5. Analysis of Market Value
Popularity of Brand and Model: The level of demand within a specific brand and model becomes an immediate observation of the appraiser since it drives value.
Rarity: Whether it is a limited edition, rare models, or a vintage watch, these will be considered more valuable. Materials: The presence of precious metals, diamonds, or other materials will be factored in. Current Market Trends: The appraiser will base the estimate on current market prices, auction results, and listings by dealers.
6. Appraisal Report
The appraiser will write a formal report including: Description of the watch, including brand, model, materials, condition, etc. Estimated value Photos of the watch
The purpose of the appraisal (insurance, resale, etc.)
7. Maintenance Recommendations
If needed, the appraiser can also make recommendations concerning cleaning or servicing regarding the maintaining of value on the watch.
Sometimes an appraiser will indeed go ahead to recommend further restoration or repair if beneficial to the value of the watch. Every appraisers’ service might be slightly different, but these are the core components.
